In my opinion there’s no better way to kick start the day than with a nutritious and tasty smoothie bowl sprinkled with nuts and seeds to pack in the phytonutrients and set you up for the day ahead. Not only are smoothies delicious and full of goodness but they are easy and quick to make, so are the perfect option if, like me, you want to quickly prepare food and be out of the door before work. They also add a certain beauty to life with their colour and decoration, and preparing them has become a comforting little morning ritual for me that I like to draw out on weekends with a good book and mug of fresh coffee.
The base of my smoothies is always a banana and about half a cup of plant milk, and then I throw in whatever other fruit I fancy. Some of my favourites are: 1/2 of a cup of strawberries, raspberries or blueberries or a mixture of all three; 1 small mango; 1 pear and 1/3 of a cup of pineapple. You can also freeze your fruit overnight and turn your smoothie into a nicecream for a hot summer morning. This gives a thicker consistency that works better for photos as your topping wont sink as quickly. All you do is blend everything together, pour into a bowl and top with whatever you fancy. I love to add seeds, nuts and fresh or dried fruit and sometimes some cacao nibs. I always always add a tablespoon of ground flax seeds everyday to make sure I get my omega-3 fatty acids and cancer fighting lignans.
