Melanie Joy’s TED Talk
Psychologist Melanie Joy coined the word ‘carnism‘, a type of speciesism, used to describe the dominant belief system that explains why we love some animals and eat others. In this video she explains how we have become alienated from our true morals and choices and debunks the myths of carnism. Melanie Joy has stated in her book that she believes it’s possible to obtain diary and eggs without violence, which is clearly not a vegan perspective. Despite this vegetarian perspective, Melanie does identify as a vegan, and this talk is quite useful to watch in order to better understand the ubiquity of Carnism, and in turn, may help vegans to develop a better understanding of the deep socialisation of the belief system of animal exploitation for food. It is also a useful video for non-vegans who are interested in exploring why they hold their beliefs around food, and may help foster better understanding for non-vegans of the vegan persepctive.
